Last I checked, CC licenses are legally binding
On a whim, I checked the January and February 2008 stats for apps.drewburden.com last night. I look at the January daily graph and saw this explosion of traffic hitting my tool called MySpaceDP. For three days straight I was pushing almost 2 gigs a day. This, of course, was on a site that normally pushed less than a meg. I did my homework and found a group of related whoretrain sites, spearheaded by traincodes.com, bombarding my server. Now, I’m a nice guy. I wrote this tool because I was bored and I thought maybe people would find a use for it. So I released it under a CC license which just requires that you give credit where credit is due. This person is not giving credit. I don’t want to punish legit users by shutting down a useful tool because someone didn’t follow the directives in a legally binding document that serves as the license for MySpaceDP. I’m all for the free flow of information and all, but you don’t use someone else’s work and pass it off as your own. That’s stealing.
I’m exploring my options here. I’m going to find the owner of the site and ask him or her to link back to me and provide credit. If that doesn’t work, perhaps I’ll start exploring my legal options.
